This project encourages every middle school student in the BISD community, along with teachers,
administrators, parents, and support staff, to read a good book and share their enthusiasm for it with
others. 30 copies of two different books will be purchased and distributed to students and staff to
read. After finishing the novel, readers will share their thoughts about the book and then pass it along
to another reader to enjoy.

Counseling with Toys
Bluebonnet Elementary
Grant Recipient: Lisa Williams
Many elementary age children have difficulty working through problems with words. Therefore,
counseling with toys will facilitate the process by providing a play environment from which they can
work through those issues that impede their academic progress. Play therapy is utilized to help
children express what is troubling them when they do not have the verbal language to express their
thoughts and feelings.

Reaching the STAARS
Cedar Creek Middle School
Grant Recipients: K. Laskowski & A. Richason
With this camera all six CCMS ELA teachers can project colorful, editable images such as artwork,
newspaper articles, passages from texts, objects, and models. Students can share, revise, edit, and
rewrite in real time, making the writing process come alive. The document camera will allow high tech
lessons to be more spontaneous and flexible to meet the dynamic needs of the twenty-first century
student.

Graphic Novels as Scaffolding
Bastrop Middle School
Grant Recipients: Z. Messina, C. Williams, A. Malone, C. Klaerner, L. Allen & K. Cheshire
Students are bombarded with electronic images that last an average of five seconds, and the mental
stamina required to read something as lengthy as a classic of literature is diminished. As part of the
scaffolding process, students need literature of equally high-interest to help them attain this level of
success. Increased mental fortitude is something that stretches across all disciplines and should be
encouraged at every opportunity. Through the use of these high-interest materials, students will be
able to visualize progressions more easily, hold focus longer, and associate academic rigor with
feelings of success.

Songwriting with Jim Papoulis
All Elementary Schools
Grant Recipients: D. Bodine, S. Gideon, L. Spreen, J. Schlechte, B. Zech, J. Jones & M. Nevares
Composer/conductor Jim Papoulis, co-founder of Foundation for Small Voices, will hold a two-day
songwriting workshop for BISD elementary choir students. An extension of the Music TEKS, the
workshop will promote creative, collaborative teamwork, providing over 300 district elementary (3rd -
6th grade) choir students a unique opportunity to compose and perform an original work. Mentored by
the composer/conductor, students will focus on singing accurately, in tune, with confidence and in
balance with others. They will also appreciate critical elements of music creation, assembling
thoughts/lyrics, beat, rhythm and melody. The workshop will conclude with a public concert showcasing
their original composition.
